Hyderabad no longer shared capital for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Starting June 2, Hyderabad no longer serves as the shared capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as mandated by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014.

Initially designated as the joint capital for a period of ten years following the bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Hyderabad now exclusively serves as the capital city of Telangana.

According to the Act, Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for both states until the end of the specified duration, after which it would solely function as the capital of Telangana, with Andhra Pradesh establishing a new capital.

The establishment of Telangana as a separate state on June 2, 2014, marked the realization of a longstanding demand. However, despite the passage of a decade since the separation, unresolved issues such as asset distribution persist between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Telangana's Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, directed officials to take possession of buildings, including the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which had been allocated to Andhra Pradesh for the ten-year transitional period.

Efforts to address remaining issues related to bifurcation were hindered when a proposed cabinet meeting by the Telangana government was reportedly postponed due to the Election Commission's reluctance, citing ongoing Lok Sabha election-related regulations.
