Paris Olympics 2024: Indian Hockey Team Eyes Record Medal Haul

India broke a 41-year Olympic medal drought in men's hockey in Tokyo and now aims to win consecutive medals, last achieved with bronze in Mexico in 1968 and Munich in 1972.

India, holding a historic total of eight Olympic gold medals from many years ago, now encounters a fiercely competitive environment in modern hockey.

In Paris, they compete in Pool B at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium against tough rivals like defending champions Belgium, former champions Australia and Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, hosts France, and African champions South Africa are placed in Pool A.

Despite India’s disappointing performances in test series in Australia and the Pro League matches in Antwerp and London, India ranks seventh globally in FIH rankings.

The Paris-bound squad includes 11 players from the Tokyo bronze medal-winning team, with veterans PR Sreejesh and Manpreet Singh participating in their fourth Olympics alongside five debutants.

With continuity from Tokyo, India looks to leverage their experience under head coach Craig Fulton, who has implemented a more defensive approach, departing from their traditional aggressive play style.

Their campaign begins on July 27 against New Zealand, followed by crucial matches against Ireland, Argentina, Belgium, Australia, and Ireland again, essential for securing a quarterfinal berth.
