MS Dhoni's Future in IPL 2025: CSK Plans and Key Player Retentions

After leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth IPL title in 2023, many expected Dhoni to retire, but, he returned for his 17th season.

Although he handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Dhoni continued to impress with his batting and wicketkeeping.

With the 2025 IPL mega auction approaching, questions about Dhoni's future have resurfaced again.

RevSportz reports that CSK plans to retain him, likely at a lower value.

Key players such as Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are expected to be retained at higher values.

The BCCI is yet to finalise retention policies for the auction. While Dhoni is part of CSK's plans for 2025, his role is uncertain.

If the BCCI reinstates the old retention rule, it could benefit both Dhoni and CSK. Though he has been batting lower in the order and limiting his running, he still contributes effectively.

CSK’s core players include Jadeja, a vital all-rounder at 36, Dube, who has thrived in the middle order, and Pathirana, a key death-over bowler. Ultimately, Dhoni's decision regarding the 2025 season remains undisclosed.
