Taxpayers Face Portal Issues as Deadline Approaches; Extension Unlikely

With the final date for filing income tax returns approaching, individuals, Chartered Accountants (CAs), and other taxpayers are busy preparing their returns.

However, taxpayers have been facing several issues while filing their returns, leading to frustration for some.

Chartered Accountants and taxpayers have been expressing their frustration to department officials, urging them to address these issues.

A few have requested the government to extend the deadline further due to ongoing problems with the income tax portal.

Although the Income Tax (IT) department has not responded to these queries, it has cautioned people about fake news circulating on social media platforms that claim the deadline has been extended to August 31, 2024.

According to sources, the IT department is working on resolving issues associated with the portal.

Some of the problems reported by taxpayers include slow page loading, upload errors, and OTP authentication issues, among others.

As per data from the Income Tax department, over 4 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) were submitted as of July 22, 2024, marking an 8% increase compared to last year.

With the number of submissions likely to increase in the coming days, the government is unlikely to extend the deadline.
