The city of Mumbai, with its glitzy high-rise buildings and bustling streets, is often seen as a symbol of modern India's economic growth and development. However, beneath the glittering façade lies a harsh reality that is frequently overlooked - the slums.
A recent viral video has brought this reality into stark focus, offering a glimpse into the life of a Zomato delivery agent, Pranjoy Borgoyary, originally from Northeast India. The video showcases Borgoyary's tiny room, which he rents for Rs 500 per month. The cramped space, barely large enough to fit a bed and a small cupboard, has no windows or ventilation and is situated next to a public toilet. In the video, Borgoyary describes the room as "suffocating."
Borgoyary posted the video on Instagram, revealing the challenges he faces daily. The narrow street leading to his room requires him to slide sideways to navigate it. At the end of the street is a narrow iron stairway that grants access to his small, shared room. The stained walls, heaps of clothing, and a curled-up kitty in one corner highlight the struggle for space in Mumbai.
The video has garnered over 4.4 million views and hundreds of comments on Instagram. Many users have expressed admiration for Borgoyary's hard work despite his difficult living conditions, while others have been shocked by the state of his room.
One user offered support, saying, "Bro, if you ever come to Goa, you can record videos and music at my little studio place anytime. Fish thali, etc., on me too. Hard work is never small work." Another user emphasized the importance of kindness and empathy, stating, "When someone shares their struggles, the last thing they deserve is ridicule. If you can't offer words of encouragement or support, then simply scroll past. You won't lose anything by showing kindness and empathy." A different commenter suggested, "You should really try modeling; you have the face to go on billboards."
The video serves as a wake-up call, reminding us that while we may live in a fast-paced, modern world, many people continue to struggle to meet their basic needs.
