Ratan Tata’s Will: Wealth split among family, Shantanu Naidu, and majorly for charity
The last wishes of India’s beloved industrialist and philanthropist, Ratan Tata, reveal a life devoted to giving and personal bonds. Following his passing on October 9, 2024, Tata’s will details the distribution of his wealth—an estimated Rs10,000 crore—primarily towards charitable initiatives, family, and trusted companions.
Tata's wealth will be divided among his half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, his brother Jimmy Tata, and his close-knit inner circle, including his assistant, Shantanu Naidu, and longtime butler, Subbiah. Tata selected senior lawyer Darius Khambata, Mehli Mistry, and his half-sisters as executors, with the Bombay High Court set to oversee the probate process.
A Lasting Legacy in Philanthropy
A significant portion of Tata’s wealth is committed to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), which is expected to be led by Tata Sons’ chairperson N Chandrasekaran. Tata bequeathed his 0.83% shares in companies like Tata Sons and Tata Motors to the foundation, ensuring his legacy of charitable contributions endures. Since its establishment in 2022, RTEF has been active in supporting non-profit initiatives and fostering sustainable investments.
Personal Touches and a Loyal Circle
The will also reflects Tata's care for his loved ones, including his loyal German Shepherd, Tito, who will remain under the care of Tata’s cook, Rajan Shaw. Known for his affection for animals, Tata welcomed Tito into his life a few years ago and made provisions for Tito’s lifelong care.
Tata's long-time executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, who shares a close personal bond with him, will receive Tata’s stake in Naidu’s companionship venture, Goodfellows, along with the forgiveness of a loan Tata extended for Naidu’s overseas studies.
The industrialist’s respect and gratitude for his staff extended to Subbiah, his butler of over three decades. Tata’s will includes a special acknowledgement of Subbiah’s loyalty, reflecting the mutual admiration and trust shared between them.
