Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA, a pivotal element in gene regulation. This prestigious accolade, announced by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden's Karolinska Institute, recognizes the profound impact of their research on understanding how organisms develop and function.

MicroRNA plays a crucial role in post-transcriptional gene regulation, governing gene activity and ensuring proper cellular processes. The Nobel Assembly emphasized the fundamental importance of this discovery, highlighting its significance in the field of molecular biology.

Ambros and Ruvkun's work has paved the way for new insights into genetic regulation, influencing various areas of biological research and medicine. Their findings have not only expanded scientific knowledge but also opened new avenues for therapeutic applications.

The winners will receive 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1.1 million) as part of the Nobel Prize. As tradition dictates, the Medicine Prize is the first of the Nobel categories to be announced each year, with the remaining five categories to be revealed in the following days.
