New Year’s Eve 2024: City-specific rules for celebrations across India
As 2024 comes to a close, cities across India have introduced regulations to ensure safe and orderly New Year’s Eve celebrations. Authorities, including local police, traffic departments, and anti-narcotics units, have outlined specific guidelines for both revelers and event organizers.
Hyderabad
Event Permits and Security: Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand has mandated that hotels, clubs, bars, and restaurants hosting ticketed events must secure permits at least 15 days in advance. CCTV cameras must be installed at key areas such as entrances, exits, and parking lots for security.
Noise Control: Outdoor sound systems must shut down by 10 PM in compliance with Supreme Court guidelines, while indoor systems are limited to 45 decibels until 1 AM.
Drug Prevention: Organizers are required to enforce a strict ban on drugs, with increased surveillance in secluded areas, including parking zones.
Alcohol Safety: Alcohol consumption rules are strictly enforced, with penalties for serving drinks to intoxicated individuals. There will also be stringent checks for drunk driving, including fines up to ₹10,000, possible imprisonment, and vehicle seizures.
Bengaluru
Security and Timings: Bengaluru Police, in coordination with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), have set a 1 AM deadline for all celebrations. Major flyovers will be closed after 10 PM, with the KIA International Airport elevated expressway being an exception. Two-wheelers will be prohibited from the expressway between 10 PM on December 31 and 6 AM on January 1.
Strict Enforcement: Police Commissioner B. Dayananda emphasized zero tolerance for violations, with special drives against drunk and drug-impaired driving throughout the night. Areas like MG Road, Brigade Road, and Koramangala will be under close surveillance due to large crowds.
Firecracker and Noise Restrictions: The use of loudspeakers and firecrackers is banned during the celebrations.
Mumbai
Extended Hours: Mumbai’s government has allowed bars, restaurants, and pubs to operate until 5 AM to facilitate extended celebrations. However, police will maintain strict oversight to ensure safety.
Terrace Parties and Alcohol Control: Terrace parties can continue beyond midnight without music, with strict decibel limits. Although there are no restrictions on the number of alcohol servings, establishments are advised to provide safe transportation for guests, including designated drivers.
Enhanced Vigilance: Public events in hotels and malls will be closely monitored, especially in areas known for youth gatherings where drug use might occur.
Other Cities
Delhi and Chennai: Both cities have underscored the importance of safety and sound control, with enhanced police presence in key entertainment districts.
Kolkata and Pune: Loudspeaker usage is restricted, and strict event deadlines are in place to ensure peaceful celebrations.
Nationwide Enforcement
Authorities across the country are adopting a zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving and narcotics violations. Preventive measures include checkpoints, vehicle checks, and the deployment of anti-drug squads to ensure a safe and secure New Year’s Eve.
