NCW urges swift action after Apoorva Mukhija faces online rape threats

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the disturbing rape and death threats received by social media influencer Apoorva Mukhija—widely known as "The Rebel Kid"—after her appearance on comedian Samay Raina's controversial show India's Got Latent.
Following her April 9 comeback video on YouTube—the first since the controversy erupted—Mukhija shared multiple screenshots of threatening and abusive messages she received across social media platforms. In response, the NCW condemned the abuse as "despicable" and stressed that no woman should feel unsafe, whether in public spaces or online.
Issuing a strong statement, the NCW urged law enforcement to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible. “Issuing threats of sexual violence or death sets a dangerous precedent and must be dealt with sternly,” the Commission said.
The NCW has written to Maharashtra Director General of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation. The Commission has also demanded a detailed action-taken report within three days.
While reiterating its disapproval of offensive content, the Commission emphasized that such brutal abuse—especially in the form of rape threats—cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Additionally, the NCW has directed authorities to ensure Mukhija’s safety and provide any necessary support. “Creating a safe and respectful digital environment is a shared responsibility—of law enforcement, social media platforms, and society as a whole,” the Commission added.
