Mega Evolution isn’t just a power boost—it’s a game-changing strategy for Trainers looking to dominate in Pokémon GO. Since its debut in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y in 2013 and its arrival in Pokémon GO in 2020, Mega Evolution has evolved itself, becoming more accessible, strategic, and beneficial for players.
Unlike regular evolution, Mega Evolution is temporary—lasting eight hours—but during that window, your Pokémon gains a dramatic spike in CP, potential type changes, and powerful bonuses that can turn the tide in Raids, Gyms, and certain Trainer Battles.
What Exactly Is Mega Evolution?
Think of Mega Evolution as your Pokémon’s ultimate form boost. It’s not permanent, but it amplifies your Pokémon’s Combat Power (CP), making them significantly stronger for a limited time. Some Pokémon, like Charizard, even change types upon Mega Evolution—turning from Fire/Flying to Fire/Dragon in the case of Mega Charizard X. These temporary transformations are key in forming effective battle strategies.
However, not every Pokémon is eligible, and Shadow Pokémon are currently excluded from Mega Evolution entirely.
How to Get Mega Energy
To unlock Mega Evolution, you’ll need Mega Energy—a resource that can be collected through:
Mega Raids: The primary source of Mega Energy. Win these battles to earn 150–250 Mega Energy depending on how fast you defeat the Mega Boss.
Field and Timed Research Tasks: Occasionally, tasks will reward you with Mega Energy.
Walking with a Buddy Pokémon: Once you’ve Mega Evolved a Pokémon, you can earn Mega Energy for that species by walking with it as your buddy.
Mega Energy requirements vary by species, and you can track how much you have via your Pokémon’s profile page next to their Candy count.
How to Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO
To find out which of your Pokémon are eligible for Mega Evolution, use the “Can Mega Evolve” filter in your Pokémon storage. When you select an eligible Pokémon, a pink “Mega Evolve” button will appear beneath the usual “Power Up” tab. Tap it, confirm, and boom—your Pokémon enters its Mega state.
Only one Pokémon can be Mega Evolved at a time. If you evolve another, the first reverts to its standard form.
You can even Mega Evolve your Pokémon while waiting in a Raid Lobby—perfect for last-minute power boosts.
How to Use Mega-Evolved Pokémon
Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be used in Raids, Gyms, and most Trainer Battles. They’re typically restricted from GO Battle League play, though special events sometimes make exceptions.
The advantages of using Mega-Evolved Pokémon go beyond just raw power:
Team Boosts: All Trainers in a raid receive stat boosts, especially those with Pokémon sharing a type with the Mega-Evolved one.
Increased Rewards: You’ll gain more Candy and XP when catching Pokémon that share a type with your Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
Candy XL Bonus: At higher Mega Levels, you also increase your odds of receiving Candy XL from catches.
To get the most from a Mega Evolution, plan it around events like Raid Hour or Community Day when you’ll encounter many relevant Pokémon.
Understanding Mega Levels
Mega Evolution isn’t just a one-time thing—your Pokémon get better at it the more they do it.
There are three Mega Levels:
Base Level
High Level
Max Level
Each level comes with additional bonuses, shorter cooldown times between Mega Evolutions (aka “rest periods”), and reduced Mega Energy costs.
Base Level Pokémon have a 7-day rest period after Mega Evolution.
High/Max Level Pokémon enjoy shorter cooldowns and enhanced bonuses.
After the first Mega Evolution, you can Mega Evolve a Pokémon again for free after the rest period—or pay a smaller Mega Energy cost to do it sooner.
You can check a Pokémon’s Mega Level and its perks by tapping the Mega Energy icon on its profile page.
Pokémon That Can Mega Evolve
While not every species is capable of Mega Evolution, the list of eligible Pokémon continues to grow. Fan favorites like Venusaur, Blastoise, Gengar, and many others have their own Mega forms. Always check the in-game Pokédex or search using the “Can Mega Evolve” filter to see who’s ready to power up.
