Indian-origin man wins Rs 8.45 crore lottery after buying jewellery for his wife
An Indian-origin man residing in Singapore, Balasubramanian Chithambaram, became an overnight millionaire after winning a grand prize of $1 million (approximately Rs 8.45 crore) in a lucky draw. The draw was conducted last Sunday (Nov 24) by Mustafa Jewellery, a popular store in Singapore.
Mr. Chithambaram had bought a gold chain for his wife three months ago at Mustafa Jewellery, making him eligible for the lucky draw. To participate, customers needed to spend over Rs 15,786 on jewellery. Mr. Chithambaram's purchase amounted to Rs 3.7 lakh, securing his entry into the draw.
In a celebratory social media post, Mustafa Jewellery announced the news: "What an unforgettable day at Mustafa Jewellery's Million Dollar Event! On 24th November, we witnessed history being made as the grand winner of USD 1,000,000 was revealed amidst cheers and excitement!"
The timing of the win was particularly poignant for Mr. Chithambaram, as it coincided with the fourth anniversary of his father's death. "Today is also my father's fourth death anniversary. It's a blessing," he said, expressing his intention to donate a portion of his winnings to the community as a token of gratitude.
The Singapore High Commission in India also extended their congratulations to Mr. Chithambaram, posting a message on X (formerly Twitter): "Congratulations to Mr Balasubramanian for winning the US$ 1 million (8.5 crore rupees) lucky draw, shopping at the iconic Mustafa Center @mustafacentresg in Singapore. Crorepati dreams do come true in SG."
In related news, earlier this week, a British man won the third-largest lottery prize of all time, pocketing 177 million pounds (Rs 1804.16 crore) in the Euromillions jackpot. According to the BBC, this win makes the individual wealthier than musicians Harry Styles and Adele, who were listed on this year's Sunday Times Rich List with fortunes of 175 million pounds and 170 million pounds, respectively.
