Gulmarg fashion show sparks controversy, designers issue apology

A fashion show held in Gulmarg on March 7 has drawn criticism for taking place during the holy month of Ramadan. The controversy escalated after concerns were raised in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly, prompting designers Shivan & Narresh to issue a public apology.
In a statement shared on X, the designers expressed regret, saying, "We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & après-ski lifestyle, without any intent to offend any religious sentiments."
They further emphasized their respect for all cultures and traditions, acknowledging the concerns raised. "We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful in the future," the statement read.
The event, which showcased a ski & après-ski lifestyle collection, featured models walking on snow. However, the timing of the show sparked criticism from some leaders in the Union Territory.
During the first day of the J&K Assembly Budget Session, a demand for an investigation into the event was raised. Addressing the issue, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified that the government had no involvement in the event.
"A private party hosted the fashion show. From what I have seen, it was inappropriate at any time of the year, let alone during Ramadan. No government permissions were sought, and no public funds were used. If any legal violations occurred, action will be taken against the organizers. If necessary, the matter will be handed over to the police for investigation," he stated.
As the controversy unfolds, authorities are reviewing whether any legal action needs to be taken.
