OpenAI has finally rolled out ChatGPT’s image generation feature to free users, after initially making it available only to paid subscribers. With this update, users can now create stunning Studio Ghibli-style AI images. However, free-tier users are limited to just three generations per day due to overwhelming demand.

ChatGPT’s Ghibli-Style AI Image Trend

After OpenAI enabled image generation for all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users on March 26, social media users quickly embraced the feature, turning their real-life photos into breathtaking Ghibli-style artworks. Previously, free-tier users had to rely on alternatives like xAI’s Grok chatbot or Google’s Gemini, which produced less detailed results.

Now, OpenAI seems to have silently extended this feature to free users. While there’s been no official announcement from OpenAI or CEO Sam Altman, many users have successfully generated Ghibli-themed images using free accounts.

How to Create Ghibli-Style AI Images with ChatGPT

If you want to try this feature yourself, follow these simple steps:

Go to ChatGPT – Open the ChatGPT website or mobile app.

Upload an Image – Click the ‘+’ sign in the bottom left corner to upload your photo.

Enter a Prompt – Type commands like "Ghiblify this" or "Turn this into a Studio Ghibli-style image."

Download Your Image – Once generated, click the download option to save it.

Image Generation Limits for Free Users

Initially, OpenAI didn’t impose a limit on how many images users could generate. However, due to high demand, restrictions were later introduced to prevent server overload. Altman even mentioned that their GPUs were “melting” from excessive usage.

As of OpenAI’s latest update on X (formerly Twitter), free-tier users can generate up to three images per day.

What is Native Image Generation?

ChatGPT has had image generation capabilities for some time, but this new update brings native image generation, meaning the chatbot can now create and edit images directly using its built-in multimodal capabilities. Unlike previous versions that relied on external AI models like DALL·E 3, this feature integrates image creation seamlessly within ChatGPT.

With this upgrade, ChatGPT can now:

Refine images through natural conversation

Handle 10-20 objects in a single image for better consistency

Combine text-based knowledge with image generation for smarter results

The Future of AI-Generated Art

As native image generation becomes more advanced, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a powerful tool for AI creativity. While competitors like Google’s Gemini introduced similar features earlier, OpenAI’s latest rollout has gained rapid traction among users.

For now, free users can enjoy creating stunning AI art, but given the high demand, it remains to be seen if OpenAI will expand or further restrict access in the future.
