Controversy Erupts Over Tagore Parody On Kapil Sharma Show
A recent episode of The Kapil Sharma Show has ignited a firestorm of indignation across India following a controversial parody performed by comedian Krushna Abhishek. The sketch, featuring a rendition of the iconic song “Ekla Chalo Re,” included offensive remarks and gestures that many believe dishonour the legacy of Thakur Rabindranath Tagore, a revered cultural icon and Nobel Laureate.
In the fiercely competitive landscape of television and OTT platforms, content creators and personalities often resort to sensational tactics to capture viewers' attention and drive ratings. While these strategies may yield short-term gains, they often raise ethical questions about the integrity of entertainment. Tactics such as controversial storylines, drama, stunts and pranks, celebrity feuds, and reality TV exploits are increasingly employed to boost TRP and business. However, this focus on sensationalism frequently compromises the balance between entertainment value and ethical storytelling, ultimately risking the dignity of cultural narratives.
Tagore, affectionately known as Gurudev, Kobiguru, and Biswokobi, was not only a poet but also a playwright, singer, composer, novelist, and, most importantly, a freedom fighter. His contributions to literature and music have left an indelible mark on Indian and global culture, with his works including Jana Gana Mana—India's national anthem—and Amar Shonar Bangla, Bangladesh’s national anthem. Despite his immense legacy, the portrayal on the show has been described as a crude prank that disrespects his memory.
Talking to Bizz Buzz, Advocate Nripendra Krishna Roy, Legal Advisor to the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation, expressed his deep dismay over the incident. “Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore was not only a poet but a playwright, singer, composer, novelist, and, last but not least, a freedom fighter. The whole world reveres and respects him,” he stated. “It is very unfortunate that such crude pranks and jokes are cracked on him from India itself. It is despicable beyond words. I will see to it that the persons involved are punished and jailed by law.”
The Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation has taken a firm stand against the episode, citing violations of Indian Penal Code provisions protecting cultural dignity. They demand a public apology from the show’s producers, a commitment to cultural sensitivity in future broadcasts, and the removal of the offensive content from all platforms.
“If these demands are not addressed by November 07, we will have no option but to initiate further legal proceedings to safeguard the integrity of Tagore’s legacy and uphold the dignity of our cultural heritage,” added Advocate Roy.
The backlash has resonated with audiences across the nation, who view this incident as an affront to Indian cultural pride. The legacy of Tagore, who renounced his knighthood in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, represents not only artistic brilliance but also a commitment to India's struggle for independence.
Dr Parimal Kanti Mondal, President, Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation said, “The comedy that insults Indian culture, insults dignity and ethos of India, that comedy should be stopped. The individuals involved must apologise.”
As the conversation continues, many are calling for greater accountability in media portrayals of cultural icons, emphasizing the need to ensure that such disrespect is not tolerated in the future. Audiences are increasingly advocating for content that engages them without compromising integrity, challenging creators to find innovative ways to captivate viewers while honouring cultural narratives.
