As per the Hurun India Rich List 2024 released in August, Ratan Tata was ranked 350th among the richest Indians with a net worth of Rs 7,900 crore. Despite his substantial wealth, Tata is known more for his philanthropy than for appearing on rich lists.

Stake in Tata Sons

Ratan Tata owns a 0.83% direct stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, which forms the majority of his net worth.

Startup Investments

Since 2014, Ratan Tata has invested in at least 25 startups. His portfolio includes prominent companies like Ola, Paytm, Urban Ladder, Lenskart, CureFit, and Urban Company. Most of these investments are made through his personal investment vehicle, RNT Associates Private Limited.

RNT Associates RNT Associates is one of Tata's main investment vehicles, with total assets of Rs 296.96 crore as of FY23. This includes Rs 186 crore in investments and Rs 77.88 crore in cash. The company reported a revenue of Rs 36.39 crore and a profit of Rs 27.71 crore in FY23. Mehli Mistry, a close associate of Tata and a trustee of several Tata trusts, is the only other director on the board.

New Ventures

Even after stepping down from his executive role at Tata Sons, Tata continued to invest in new ventures. He co-founded Avanti Finance Private Limited, a microlender, with Nandan Nilekani in 2016. Avanti aims to improve the lives of 100 million households in India through a technology-based lending platform.

In 2017, Tata founded Electrodrive Powertrain Solutions Private Limited (Electra EV), which manufactures powertrains for electric vehicles. Electra EV is the sole supplier of powertrains for the Tata ACE Model and holds a significant share in the Tata Tigor model. In 2022, Electra EV raised over $25 million from GEF Capital.

Venture Capital Funds

Ratan Tata has also established several investment funds. In 2016, he collaborated with the University of California to create the UC-RNT Fund, investing in companies like Mswipe Technologies and NestAway. He is also a part of the Singapore-based SeedPlus fund, which raised close to $18 million in 2017, backed by notable investors like Cisco Investments and Fidelity International’s Eight Roads Ventures.

Ratan Tata’s legacy is not just in the wealth he has amassed but in the significant impact he continues to make through his investments and philanthropy.
