New Train Ticket Advance Reservation Rules Effective November 1: 5 Key Points to Know
Starting November 1, new rules for train ticket advance reservations will take effect. Discover the five key points you need to know about these changes, including reservation periods and impacts on existing bookings.
Indian Railways
The Indian Railways has implemented a significant update to its ticketing policy by reducing the advance reservation period (ARP) for train tickets from 120 days to 60 days, effective November 1, 2024. Passengers with existing bookings will not be affected by this change and can continue with their travel plans as originally scheduled.
Key Details of the New Policy:
1. Purpose of Change: The Ministry stated that this revision aims to promote genuine passengers and better reflect actual demand, noting that about 21% of reservations made 61 to 120 days in advance were cancelled, and 5% of passengers did not show up.
2. Exceptions for Certain Trains: Daytime express trains, such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express, will continue to operate under the previous, lower time limits for advance reservations.
3. Foreign Tourists: The advance reservation period of 365 days for foreign tourists will remain unchanged.
4. Existing Bookings: Tickets booked under the old 120-day ARP before October 31, 2024, will still be valid. Passengers can cancel reservations made beyond the new 60-day ARP.
5. Addressing No-Shows: The new policy aims to combat the issue of passengers not showing up without cancelling their tickets, which can lead to impersonation and fraud.
6. Historical Context: The Ministry also highlighted that between 1995 and 1998, the advance reservation period was as low as 30 days.
Additional Updates
The Western Railway announced that penalties would be imposed for passengers exceeding the luggage limits for their travel class, urging travellers to avoid overcrowding at stations and to adhere to the specified baggage allowances. Items such as scooters and bicycles, as well as oversized consignments, do not qualify for the free luggage allowance.
This ticketing policy change reflects the Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
