YouTube is reportedly working on a feature that allows users to adjust audio quality settings, but access may be restricted to YouTube Premium subscribers, according to recent findings by Android Authority.
The feature, currently found only within YouTube’s internal code, could introduce multiple audio quality options. Users may have the ability to choose between different levels, such as a standard setting, a high-bitrate option, and an automatic mode that adapts based on internet speed. However, it remains unclear when or if YouTube will officially roll out this functionality.
While video quality adjustments have long been available to all users, audio quality has historically depended on the original uploader. If implemented, this update could represent a significant shift, particularly for users seeking enhanced audio experiences on the platform.
This development aligns with YouTube’s ongoing efforts to push its Premium subscription service. The company has repeatedly introduced new incentives to attract more users to its paid tier. Recently, YouTube launched a cheaper Premium Lite subscription in select markets, offering an ad-free experience while omitting offline downloads and background playback.
At present, there is no official confirmation from YouTube regarding the audio quality feature. Given that the function only exists as code within YouTube’s platform, it remains uncertain when or if it will be integrated into the service.
Industry analysts suggest that if YouTube moves forward with the change, it could appeal to audiophiles and users seeking higher-quality streaming experiences.
