Meta-owned WhatsApp is gearing up to add augmented reality (AR) capabilities to its video calling feature. As reported by WhatsApp update tracker WABetainfo, AR effects and filters have been spotted in the iOS 24.17.10.74 update, currently available through TestFlight. According to WABetainfo, it seems WhatsApp plans to give iOS users the same AR features that are already accessible on Android.

WhatsApp is introducing a variety of new features to boost the platform's usability. These updates include dynamic facial filters for video calls, allowing users to customise and enhance their appearance. A background editing tool will enable users to blur their surroundings or choose from pre-set backgrounds. Additionally, a low-light mode toggle will improve visibility in dim lighting, ensuring effective communication even without natural light. A touch-up mode tool will also be available to smooth the user's appearance during video calls.

WhatsApp will save customised settings for video calls, so users won’t need to reconfigure their preferences for each call. These features are currently available to select beta testers using the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS through TestFlight and are expected to be widely rolled out in the coming weeks.

In related news, Meta has revised its WhatsApp Business messaging policy to permit companies in regulated industries to send promotional messages to users in India via the WhatsApp Business platform. Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a new feature aimed at improving user privacy. The "Username and PIN" feature will allow users to use usernames instead of phone numbers. According to WABetainfo, this new option will provide three privacy settings: "Username," "Phone number," and "Username with PIN."
