WhatsApp Introduces New Image Verification Feature to Combat Misinformation
In today’s digital landscape, verifying the authenticity of images shared on WhatsApp is essential to curb misinformation. With manipulated and fake images circulating widely, users need effective tools to confirm image reliability.
To address this, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new feature that allows users to verify images shared in chats, similar to Google Lens. The highly anticipated "Search Images on Web" feature, available in the beta version, aims to help users check the authenticity and source of images on the platform.
According to WABetaInfo, this feature is now accessible in beta build 2.24.23.13 on the Google Play Store. It integrates with Google Search, allowing users to upload an image and view related sources and context.
Steps to Verify Images on WhatsApp (For Beta Users)
- Download the image you wish to verify.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select "Search on Web" from the dropdown menu.
- The image will be sent to Google Search to find similar images and background information.
WhatsApp assures users that images remain private and are not shared with Meta or any platform other than Google. The feature is expected to reach the stable version soon, though its availability on iOS is yet to be confirmed.
In addition, WhatsApp has introduced a "Custom Lists" feature, enabling users to prioritize and manage communications for a more organized experience.
