Google Messages has introduced a new feature allowing users to override profile images that appear in chats, thanks to an enhancement in the Profile Discovery feature. This update brings much-needed customization options to improve the user experience.

What’s New?

Previously, Google Messages defaulted to using a contact’s Google Account picture for profile images, leaving no room for users to personalize how contacts appeared in their chats. Many users expressed dissatisfaction, citing the lack of control over this aspect of customization.

Now, you can choose the profile image displayed in Google Messages by using the Profile Discovery tool, which lets you select between the contact’s Google Account picture or a local photo from your contact list. This feature is available in both beta and stable versions of the app.

How to Customize Your Contact’s Profile Image

Here’s a simple guide to changing a profile image:

Open a chat in Google Messages.

Tap the contact’s name or profile picture at the top of the conversation.

On the details page, tap the profile picture.

Swipe left or right to select the image you prefer—either the contact’s Google Account picture or a photo saved in your local contacts.

This step-by-step process ensures you have control over how your contacts appear in your conversations, enhancing personalization.

Google Messages: Recent Improvements

Google Messages has undergone significant updates recently. For instance, in October, layout changes were discovered in an APK, hinting at a more streamlined design. Additionally, Google is making it easier to back up and restore messages, ensuring data safety and accessibility.

Why This Matters

While this customization option should have been available from the start, it’s reassuring to see Google responding to user feedback. Addressing such issues demonstrates the company’s commitment to improving Google Messages as a chat platform.

Though not as popular as some other messaging apps, Google Messages is steadily improving, making it a contender for users seeking secure and customizable communication tools.
