As Android 15 approaches its release - nearly sixteen years after the debut of the Android operating system - anticipation is mounting over the new features that will enhance user experience and security.

Internally code-named "Vanilla Ice Cream," Android 15 is set to introduce several noteworthy improvements across various domains. Here are five of the most eagerly anticipated features:

Satellite Messaging

One of the most groundbreaking features coming to Android 15 is satellite messaging. Despite the ubiquity of smartphones, connectivity issues still persist, especially in remote areas. To address this, Google is planning to introduce satellite messaging feature in Android 15, allowing users to stay connected even in areas without traditional network coverage.

i)Extended connectivity: Satellite messaging fills gaps in coverage, especially in remote areas.

ii)Initial rollout: Currently observed on recent Pixel phones with Android 15 beta connected to T-Mobile.

iii)Potential expansion: Could leverage T-Mobile's partnership with Starlink for broader satellite coverage.

Anti-Theft Features

With a special focus on improving security, Google will introduce several new anti-theft measures in its new OS - Android 15. Among many features, one that stands out is the Theft Detection Lock feature, which detects common theft patterns, such as the rapid acceleration of a stolen phone. If such patterns are detected, the phone will automatically lock itself, making it harder for thieves to access or sell the device.

i)Theft Detection Lock: Detects theft patterns and locks the phone.

ii)Compatibility: Will be available on devices running with Android 10 operating system and above through a Google Play Services update.

iii)Additional measures: Includes factory reset protection, updates to Find My Device settings, and mandatory biometric authentication for security changes.

Private Space

Keeping in mind those users who keep sharing their phones but still want to maintain privacy, Google is introducing a Private Space feature in Android 15. This feature allows users to create a secure area within the App Drawer where they can store apps that require an extra layer of privacy.

i)Secure storage: Create a separate and secure area for privacy-sensitive apps.

ii)Hidden access: Can be hidden and accessed only via a search bar, requiring a separate PIN.

iii)Use cases: Ideal for banking apps, health apps, or other apps which need enhanced privacy.

Enhanced Fraud and Scam Protection

Android 15 will also bring significant improvements in its fraud and scam protection feature. Utilising the Gemini Nano on-device version of Google's Gemini AI language model, the new system can listen to calls in real time and detect common scam tactics.

i)Real-time scam detection: Uses AI to identify and block scam calls.

ii)Behavioural analysis: Google's AI analyses permission usage and app interactions for suspicious behaviour.

iii)Screen sharing protection: Hides sensitive information during screen sharing sessions to prevent social engineering attacks.

Loudness Control

Addressing a common frustration of varying audio levels, Android 15 adopts the CTA-2075 loudness standard. This standard, designed for over-the-top television and online video distribution, allows Android devices to adjust dynamic range compression based on the audio content and the connected headphones or speakers.

i)Consistent audio levels: Adjusts audio dynamically to avoid sudden loudness spikes.

ii)Developer requirements: Requires loudness metadata in AAC-encoded audio for optimal performance.

iii)Improved user experience: Reduces jarring volume changes in videos and music.

Android 15 is poised to deliver a range of innovative features that enhance connectivity, security, privacy, fraud protection, and audio quality. From satellite messaging to improved anti-theft measures and Private Space, these advancements reflect Google's commitment to addressing user needs and staying ahead in the competitive smartphone market. As the final release approaches, Android users have much to look forward to in 2024.
