Spam texts have become a nuisance, but there are ways to tackle them effectively. Here's how to stop spam texts and safeguard yourself from potential threats.

Spam texts, also known as phishing texts or smishing, are attempts by cybercriminals to deceive individuals through text messages, often with the aim of stealing personal information or scamming money. It's crucial not to engage with these texts or click on any links they contain. Instead, block the sender, report the spam, and delete the message immediately.

Responding to spam texts can inadvertently validate your phone number, leading to more spam. Therefore, silence is the best approach. Here's how to block spam texts on both iPhone and Android devices:

Block spam texts on iPhone:

Open the text message.

Tap the arrow next to the contact number at the top.

Tap the "i" (Info) button.

Scroll down and tap "Block this Caller."

Block spam texts on Android:

Open the text message.

Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.

Tap "Details" or "More."

Tap "Block Contact" or "Block Number."

Additionally, your phone may have built-in features to filter out spam messages automatically:

On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > turn on "Filter Unknown Senders."

On Android, in the Messaging app settings, enable "Spam Protection" if available.

Your wireless carrier may also provide spam filtering tools, such as Verizon Call Filter or AT&T Call Protect.

For added protection, consider using third-party apps like Nomorobo or RoboKiller, which filter and block spam messages.

If you receive spam texts, report them to your cellular provider by forwarding the message to SPAM (7726). You can also report them to the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission.

Recognizing spam texts is crucial. Look for signs like vague messages, urgent requests, shortened links, misspellings, and grammatical errors. Legitimate companies typically don't ask for personal information via text.

Recent spam text scams include offers to remove negative credit report information, health and beauty product offers, weight loss surveys, political fundraising, and get-rich-quick schemes. Be vigilant and delete suspicious texts immediately.

By following these steps and staying vigilant, you can effectively combat spam texts and protect yourself from potential harm.
