Microsoft has lifted the safeguard hold that was previously blocking the Windows 11 2024 Update on PCs with Auto HDR enabled, following reports of gaming-related issues.

In December, users voiced complaints about Auto HDR, a Windows feature designed to enhance color and brightness by upgrading from Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) to High Dynamic Range (HDR). Gamers noted that enabling Auto HDR caused game graphics to appear overly high-contrast and oversaturated. Others experienced game freezes on HDR-capable displays, which prompted Microsoft to acknowledge the problem and issue a block on updates for affected devices.

"Users may observe distorted colors or experience game freezes when Auto HDR is enabled on certain display configurations," Microsoft confirmed.

To mitigate these issues, Microsoft applied a compatibility hold on devices with Auto HDR turned on, tagging them with safeguard ID 55382406 in Windows Update for Business reports.

This week, Microsoft announced that the issue was resolved in the January 2025 non-security preview update (KB5050094), which also addressed USB audio playback issues. For users who prefer not to install preview updates, Microsoft suggests disabling Auto HDR through the ‘Graphics’ option under System > Display in the 'Settings' app.

With the compatibility hold lifted, users affected by this issue can now update to Windows 11 24H2, which began its broad rollout on January 22. Additionally, the update is being automatically pushed to eligible, non-managed devices running Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 Home and Pro editions.

Microsoft previously placed similar compatibility holds for devices facing issues with Assassin’s Creed games, including crashes, freezes, and audio glitches.

However, users may still be unable to upgrade if their devices are affected by multiple safeguard holds. These include issues related to ASUS devices, Asphalt 8 (Airborne), Dirac audio software, integrated cameras, Safe Exam Browser, and Easy Anti-Cheat applications.

The Windows 11 2024 Update is now available for download for those with compatible systems.
