Meta shuts down Its AI-generated Instagram and Facebook profiles
Meta is shutting down AI-generated profiles on Instagram and Facebook after users revived interest in them, leading to viral conversations. These profiles, first launched in September 2023 as part of an experimental AI project, included personas like "Liv," a "proud Black queer momma," and "Carter," a relationship coach. The AI-powered accounts engaged with users, posting pictures and responding to messages. However, when users probed the profiles about their creators, Liv revealed that her development team had no Black members, a statement that gained significant attention.
The backlash led to the profiles being deleted by Meta. A bug preventing users from blocking these accounts had also been reported. A Meta spokesperson clarified that these accounts were part of a test conducted by humans, not a new product rollout. Despite the removal of these AI-generated accounts, users can still create their own chatbots, including therapists, best friends, tutors, and more.
Meta's chatbots are designed with disclaimers, warning users that some responses may be inaccurate or inappropriate, though moderation and policy enforcement remain unclear. While legal responsibilities around chatbot behavior are still uncertain, especially following a lawsuit against Character.ai, the company continues to allow users to create custom chatbots for various purposes.
