Meta appears to be preparing for a new iteration of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighting 2025 as a pivotal year for the company’s wearable AI technology. Though specific details were not disclosed during Meta’s recent earnings call, Zuckerberg’s remarks indicate that a third-generation model is on the horizon.

The company has already introduced two versions of its smart eyewear: Ray-Ban Stories in 2021 and the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in 2023. Recent reports suggest that an upcoming model could feature a built-in display, enhancing user experience by allowing previews of captured images and mobile notifications.

While Meta has yet to confirm a launch timeline or pricing, Zuckerberg’s statement during the Q4 2024 earnings call suggested the significance of a third generation in shaping the product’s future. He noted that many breakthrough consumer electronics reach widespread adoption by their third version, with sales often hitting 5-10 million units.

“This will be the year when we determine the trajectory of AI glasses as a category,” Zuckerberg said. “2025 is set to be a defining moment in deciding whether we are on a path toward mass adoption of hundreds of millions, or even billions, of AI-powered smart glasses.”

While no official specifications have been confirmed, industry leaks and user expectations highlight key features that could be included in Meta’s upcoming release:

1. Integrated Full-Color Display

Reports indicate that Meta is considering a compact in-lens screen for the next-generation glasses. This could allow users to see real-time notifications, images, or augmented reality content without external devices. A full-color display would enhance usability, particularly for photo previews and interactive applications.

2. Competitive Pricing Strategy

Pricing speculation remains uncertain, with some reports suggesting the new model could cost significantly more than the current $299 entry-level version. Estimates indicate a potential price point around $650, though some predictions suggest it could reach $1,000 depending on added features such as upgraded lenses, improved speakers, and more advanced AI capabilities.

3. Enhanced Camera Capabilities

Current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses include a 12MP camera used for Meta AI’s Look and Ask functionality, which enables the AI assistant to analyze surroundings. However, users have noted that image quality could be improved. An upgraded camera sensor with higher resolution or improved low-light performance would significantly boost the device’s appeal for hands-free photography and video recording.

4. Extended Battery Life

Battery life remains a critical factor for smart glasses. The existing Meta glasses last up to four hours with moderate usage, but intensive tasks such as streaming music or video significantly reduce longevity. If the next-generation model includes a display, maintaining at least three to four hours of continuous operation would be crucial for practical everyday use.
