New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIM-M) has developed indigenous intelligent vessel traffic services (IVTS), which will make ports more efficient and less expensive. The existing vessel traffic services (VTS) is totally dependent on the system provider, thus limiting accessibility, official sources told Bizz Buzz, adding that the maintenance cost is more than the cost of the system.

The IVTS, on the other hand, has an open architecture, which can accommodate new features. The IVTS boasts of state-of-the-art technology, which is run by trained workforce. The IVTS will markedly improve port logistics, the officials said.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways had sanctioned Rs10 crore to IIT Madras for the development of indigenous VTS software in 2020. Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) Mansukh Mandaviya had announced this at the launch of the indigenous software solution for VTS and Vessels Traffic Monitoring Systems (VTMS). VTS and VTMS are software, which determine vessel positions, the position of other traffic or meteorological hazard warnings, and extensive management of traffic within a port or waterway. VTS contributes to the safety of life at sea, safety and efficiency of navigation, and protection of the marine environment, adjacent shore areas, work sites and offshore installations from possible adverse effects of maritime traffic.

VTMS are installed in some of the busiest waters in the world, and are making valuable contributions to safer navigation, more efficient traffic flow, and protection of the environment. Traffic flow in busy approach routes, access channels, and harbours can be coordinated safely, in the best interest of the port and its users. Incidents and emergency situations can be dealt with quickly. Data from traffic movements can be stored and used as reference information for port administration, port authorities, coastguards and search and rescue services. VTMS are mandatory under the IMO Convention SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea). The VTMS traffic image is compiled and collected by means of advanced sensors such as radar, AIS, direction finding, CCTV and VHF or other co-operative systems and services. Modern VTMS integrate all information into a single operator working environment for ease of use and in order to allow for effective traffic organization and communication.
