If you are overwhelmed with unwanted messages from businesses or spam, a new tool in Google Messages might be useful.

Android Authority has observed that a new option is appearing at the bottom of certain messages, stating, “Unsubscribe to stop receiving messages.” By tapping this option, you'll see a prompt asking for your reason to unsubscribe, with choices such as “not signed up,” “too many messages,” “no longer interested,” “spam,” or “other.”

Choosing any of the first three options will automatically send the message “STOP,” while selecting “other” allows you to provide more information before sending the “STOP” message, and opting for “spam” gives you the additional choice to report the sender.

After completing the unsubscribe process, the text “unsubscribe request sent” will show up beneath the “STOP” message, and a “Start” button will appear in the bottom right corner, allowing you to resubscribe to automated messages from that sender.

Just send 'STOP'

It’s a fairly thorough system, although since it primarily just sends the word “STOP,” it may not necessarily be faster than doing that manually. The key purpose seems to be to simplify the process for individuals who may not realize they can unsubscribe.

This feature is currently being rolled out, so if it isn't available to you yet, keep an eye out, as it will likely be accessible soon – but at the moment, it's only being distributed to users in the US, UK, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, and Spain.

Additionally, note that this feature is only compatible with Google Messages, so if you are using a different messaging application, you'll need to continue unsubscribing using the traditional method.
