Google is set to add new labels in search results to show whether content was created or edited using artificial intelligence (AI).

With AI-generated content becoming more common, the new labels aims to improve transparency and help users make better decisions about the media they see online.

Key Features of the New System

C2PA Integration: Google will use technology from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to tag content with metadata that reveals if it was made by AI tools.

Google users can find this information using Google’s “About this image” feature in Search, Images, and Lens.

Advertising Compliance: The AI content labels will also be included in Google’s advertising systems to ensure that ads featuring AI content follow Google’s rules, making it more reliable for users and advertisers.

YouTube Developments: Google is looking into labeling AI-generated or AI-edited videos on YouTube, giving viewers more information about the content.

Technical Standards and Content Credentials

To support this labeling system, Google and its partners have created new standards called Content Credentials. These will track the history of content creation, confirming details like the camera used and whether the media was edited or made by AI. This system is designed to prevent tampering and ensure trustworthiness.

Ongoing Transparency Efforts

Besides labeling, the tech company is continuing its work on SynthID, a watermarking tool from Google DeepMind. This tool will help identify AI-generated media in various formats, including text, images, audio, and video.

With these efforts, Google aims to make online content clearer and more trustworthy as AI plays a bigger role in how media is created.
