How Huawei Overtook Apple in Smartwatch Market Share in 2024

Huawei has surpassed Apple in the global smartwatch and fitness band market for the first time in 2024, according to a recent report from IDC. The Chinese tech giant has emerged as the leader in wrist-worn device shipments, marking a significant shift in the smartwatch industry, traditionally dominated by Apple.

Huawei’s strategy has been focused on expanding its product lineup and geographical reach. The release of the Huawei GT5 and GT5 Pro models, both equipped with cutting-edge health-tracking technologies, has strengthened its position in the market.

These devices cater to a growing demand for smartwatches that offer advanced fitness and health features, which has resonated well in regions like Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East.

While Apple’s Series 10 smartwatch provided a temporary sales boost during the third quarter, the company is facing increasing competition from Huawei and other emerging brands. Despite still leading the global smartwatch market, Apple’s position is being challenged as rivals like Huawei innovate and tailor products to different markets. Industry observers have pointed out that Apple must introduce new designs and features to maintain its dominance.

The surge in Huawei’s shipments has been fueled by its strong performance in China, where wrist-worn device shipments increased by 20 per cent in 2024. This growth has been in contrast to a slight global decline in shipments, as reported by IDC.

Chinese consumers are increasingly drawn to smartwatches and fitness bands for their health tracking capabilities and stylish designs. Alongside Huawei, other brands like Xiaomi and Samsung have also made gains in the market. Xiaomi’s affordable Band 9 and Watch S series, combined with Samsung’s wide range of devices, have contributed to a growing shift in consumer preferences.
