As we celebrate Dussehra, we must remember the eternally relevant message of ‘victory of good over evil’ as our society is fraught with many social evils. From wars to hunger, human race is struggling with many issues, each of which needs our urgent attention. In this context, the ‘triumph of good over evil’ implies that we have to conquer all evils to make lives more meaningful. In what can be a heartening development, technology can be a great enabler in winning over these evils. Be it spreading the reach of quality education or providing affordable healthcare in the remotest regions, social evils can be greatly eradicated by effectively leveraging technology. The world has already seen the application of technology is all walks of human lives. Let’s take the example of the education sector. In India, both public and private educational institutions have greatly adopted e-learning, and tele-education modes to provide quality education through digital means. For instance, initiatives like PM E-Vidhya, DIKSHA, E-Pathshala and others are examples of technology getting leveraged to provide e-education in every nook and corner of the country. The emergence of new Edtech firms has greatly enhanced the reach of professional learning, making youth industry-ready.

Similarly, health is another sector, which has greatly transformed through technological interventions. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), big data, cloud computing and many others, have made deep inroads in the health care sector. From faster diagnosis to effective preventive measures, healthcare players are using technology for better healthcare delivery. There is not a single sector that has not seen the intervention of technology in recent decades. Agriculture, manufacturing, mining, telecom, energy and utilities, financial services, public services, military, space research and many more have benefitted from the use of technology in various applications. Simply put, technology has emerged as the most potent weapon to defeat the forces of evil. It holds the power to dispel darkness. It is should be noted that technology is also a double-edged sword. While it has the power of solving human race’s many emerging problems, this very technology can also be used to take the human race towards destruction.

Military technology, for instance, has seen many such examples in the last five decades. Atomic weapons can wipe out the human race from the face of earth in a fraction of a second. New innovations in the field of AI pose the threat of creating something, which human beings may not fully control. Chemical weapons, created from advance research in the field of biology, are destructive means in human hands. In this perspective, the world has to take care of the fact that technology has to be a force of good that can solve myriad problems. We have to understand that technology is a tool that can be moulded in either the good or evil way by human beings, who create them, in the first place. It is, therefore, important that the endeavour of human beings must be at achieving universal brotherhood with new-age technology as the facilitator.
