Marking a decade of the Octo series, Bulgari has set a new milestone in ultra-thin watchmaking with the Octo Finissimo Ultra, now the thinnest mechanical watch in existence. At just 1.8mm thick, this latest creation integrates a manual-winding calibre BVL 180 directly into the case, with the caseback functioning as the main-plate for all 170 components.

This innovation is not just about mechanical prowess. Each of the ten limited-edition pieces includes a QR code on the dial, providing owners with access to a unique NFT artwork and a digital experience through the 'Bvlgari Singvlarity' software. This blend of horology and digital tech reflects Bulgari's commitment to pushing boundaries.

Since the Octo collection's inception in 2012, Bulgari has continuously set records in thin watchmaking, achieving seven world records between 2014 and 2021. The Octo Finissimo Ultra now adds an eighth record, solidifying Bulgari's leadership in this niche. Despite its remarkable thinness, the watch maintains a 50-hour power reserve, thanks to its large barrel ingeniously incorporated into the slim design.

Bulgari's creation isn't without competition. The race for the thinnest mechanical watch has seen intense rivalry, particularly with Piaget, whose Altiplano Ultimate Concept previously held the record at 2mm thick. Yet, Bulgari's new achievement surpasses this by a mere 0.2mm, showcasing the brand's relentless pursuit of innovation.

The Octo Finissimo Ultra's technical feats required three years of development, involving multiple teams across Switzerland. The use of tungsten carbide for the caseback/main-plate ensured both durability and ultra-thin construction. Additionally, Bulgari reinvented traditional watch components, such as splitting the crown's functions into two horizontal wheels to maintain the slim profile.

While the QR code on the dial may seem like a bold, perhaps controversial, design choice, it is a step towards integrating traditional watchmaking with modern digital assets. The NFT and virtual tour connected to the QR code provide an exclusive digital dimension for each owner, aligning with the growing trend of blending physical and digital worlds.

Bulgari's Octo Finissimo Ultra not only represents a significant technical achievement but also heralds a new era where fine watchmaking and digital innovation converge. As we celebrate this marvel, the question remains: what groundbreaking statement will Bulgari make next?
