Bluesky has expanded its video capabilities with a new update that allows uploads of videos up to 3 minutes long, a significant increase from the previous one-minute limit. This update gives content creators more flexibility, especially for those using Flashes, the photo and video app built on Bluesky.

Along with the video improvements, the update also enhances inbox management. A new "requests" section has been added to Bluesky's Direct Messages (DMs), allowing users to better manage incoming messages from people they don’t know. The update also introduces the ability to reject unsolicited messages, helping to reduce spam in inboxes.

This update comes as CEO Jay Graber took the stage at SXSW to discuss Bluesky's rapid growth. With nearly 33 million users, the platform continues to gain momentum. Graber, in a keynote speech, emphasized Bluesky's "billionaire-proof" approach to social media, highlighting the platform's openness and decentralization. She explained that if a billionaire took control of Bluesky or made changes that users disliked, they could easily switch to another platform while still using the same network.

On the business front, Graber discussed Bluesky’s exploration of subscriptions and paid developer services for those creating apps on the platform. She also revealed that Bluesky is considering turning features like moderation services and custom feeds into a marketplace, where the company could potentially earn revenue from transactions.

In addition, Bluesky is exploring partnerships in generative AI, focusing on user consent regarding data usage for AI development.
