Apple to bring cellular connectivity to Macs, working on own modems: Report
Apple is reportedly developing a plan to bring cellular connectivity to its Macs, eliminating the need for Wi-Fi to access the internet. As per Bloomberg, the tech giant has been working on creating its own cellular modems, a move that could extend the capabilities of cellular connectivity beyond the Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad.
The modem, which could arrive as early as 2026, may also be incorporated into future devices like headsets, potentially including Apple's Vision Pro XR. The new cellular modem would enable Macs to connect to the internet without relying on Wi-Fi or mobile hotspots, offering users greater flexibility and convenience. This innovation could also reduce the need to drain an iPhone's battery while sharing a hotspot, making it easier to stay connected on the go.
While the concept of cellular-enabled PCs isn't entirely new—Windows on Arm laptops have already experimented with 4G and 5G connectivity via Qualcomm modems—Apple's push to develop its own modems could set a new standard in how users experience internet access on their devices.
