In response to new European Union (EU) regulations mandating USB-C as the standard for electronic devices, Apple has discontinued its iPhone 14 and iPhone SE (3rd generation) models in affected regions. These models were the last iPhones to feature the Lightning port.

The EU's new law, effective December 28, requires electronic devices, including phones, tablets, and cameras, to use a single type of charger to reduce e-waste and standardize fast charging technology.

Although current users with Lightning or micro-USB port devices are not directly affected, the regulation prevents manufacturers from selling products without USB-C ports in the EU. Many budget Android smartphones have already adopted USB-C, so the impact is more significant for Apple.

Apple introduced USB-C ports with the iPhone 15 series in 2023, phasing out the proprietary Lightning port. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE models were still being sold at discounted prices until this new regulation prompted their discontinuation in the EU. These models will remain available through third-party sellers while stocks last.

Outside the EU, including in markets like the United States, India, and China, Apple continues to sell the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE. Apple is also expected to launch a new iPhone SE with a USB-C port in early 2025, aligning with global market demands and regulatory trends.
