OpenAI’s latest rollout of ChatGPT’s native image generation to free-tier users has sparked a viral trend online, particularly with Studio Ghibli-style artwork. The feature, previously available to paid users, gained rapid traction as millions began experimenting with AI-generated images.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that ChatGPT recorded one million users within an hour of the update. This surge followed a previous milestone where the chatbot gained a million users in its first five days after launch in November 2022.
On March 26, OpenAI extended its AI-generated image capabilities to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users globally. The feature, known for its ability to transform photos into Studio Ghibli-style visuals, became a sensation among social media users. Initially restricted to premium users, it was later made accessible to free-tier accounts, leading to an even greater surge in demand.
However, the influx of users prompted OpenAI to impose temporary limitations due to high GPU consumption. Altman stated that the company is working on optimizing efficiency. “Our GPUs are melting. We will introduce temporary rate limits while improving performance,” he posted on X, adding that free-tier users will soon be restricted to three image generations per day.
Altman’s announcement triggered widespread discussion on social media. While many users appreciated the new feature, others debated its practical applications beyond entertainment. A user on X questioned how AI-generated images could transition from a novelty to a business tool, emphasizing the need for AI to drive productivity rather than remain a trend.
Another social media user pointed out that while the feature is engaging, it may struggle to sustain long-term interest unless integrated into daily AI-driven workflows.
Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has grown from a text-based AI assistant to a multifaceted tool incorporating image generation and other advanced capabilities.
