India to Unveil Its Own Generative AI Model: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Announcing the initiative at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, Vaishnaw said that the model will be powered by the India AI Compute Facility, which has secured 19,000 GPUs to develop a large language model (LLM) . Close to 15,000 are high-end. The government has overreached its target of 10,000 GPUs.
About six developers have been identified who can roll this out in 8-10 months.
In a press conference regarding the India AI Mission, the minister said, “Cost of compute — GPU access per hour — after the 40% govt incentive will be less than a dollar in India, the lowest in the world.”
Notably, the development comes after the US government restricted export of AI compute infrastructure and limiting the use of language models that are dominated by US tech heavyweights. Following the launch of this model India will be among a select group of companies including the US and China wherein local companies are manufacturing prominent models.
