India has been tipped as the host country for the next global artificial intelligence summit, an announcement in this regard may be made on Tuesday during the Paris AI Action Summit, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will co-chair with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, sources familiar with the issue on basis of anonymity, said on Monday.

If the summit is confirmed, it would create India the only country to host a summit focusing on AI safety, following that of the United Kingdom, South Korea and France. In its request towards the French side in its proposal to France, it is stated that the Indian delegation has suggested that it will host the summit from November 2025 to January 2026, as one of the people mentioned above stated.

Dr. Sivaramakrishnan R Guruvayur, research advisor at the IIT Madras' Center for Responsible AI, stated that the PM and the Indian delegation are focused on three areas: to create AI available to everyone particularly for the world's majority as well as to push for the adoption of global AI Governance norms, standards and guidelines that will ensure the ethical and safe development of AI and also to demonstrate the ways AI can be utilized in emerging economies such as India's, and to solve problems which are unique to nations similar to our own. "India is hopeful of getting other leaders to agree to global AI governance norms as a regional leader," Dr Guruvayur said.

In the first ethical and safe development of AI Summit was held in Bletchley Park in the UK in 2023. It led to the Bletchley Declaration, in which India, China, USA, UK and 24 other nations, as well as the EU recognized that a few risk related to AI might turn out to be "catastrophic". The signatories agreed to "work together in an inclusive manner to ensure human-centric, trustworthy and responsible AI that is safe". This was followed by Seoul Summit in May 2024. This year's Paris AI Action Summit is the third summit in the series.
