HMPV
In Hyderabad, Telangana, the Mani Microbiological Laboratory has reported 11 cases of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus), first detected in December 2024. The laboratory tested 258 individuals with viral infections, of which 205 were diagnosed with upper respiratory illnesses. Among these, 11 tested positive for HMPV, according to their Respiratory Viral Pneumonia Panel Data.
Despite this, the laboratory has reassured the public that there is no reason for alarm. All 11 patients have recovered and been discharged. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has also stated that HMPV is not a new virus and has been circulating globally, including in India. They emphasized that there have been no unusual instances of influenza or severe respiratory diseases, and the situation is being closely monitored. The ICMR assured the public that all necessary measures and equipment are in place to manage the virus effectively. Concerns arose due to reports of HMPV cases in China, with seven cases already confirmed in India.
HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) Symptoms:

Treatment for HMPV:
There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. However, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and supporting the immune system. Common treatments include:
Rest: Adequate rest helps the body fight the virus.
Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids is important to prevent dehydration.
Over-the-counter medications: Pain relievers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) and decongestants can help alleviate symptoms like fever, headaches, and body aches.
Cough suppressants: If the cough is severe, a doctor may recommend cough medications to ease discomfort.
Oxygen therapy: In cases where breathing becomes difficult, oxygen therapy may be required in a hospital setting.
Inhalers or nebulizers: These may be used for wheezing or shortness of breath.
If symptoms worsen or become severe, especially in high-risk individuals, medical attention should be sought promptly.
