TDP backs Waqf amendment bill, affirms Chandrababu Naidu’s support for muslims

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a key ally of the NDA, has officially announced its support for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Party chief Chandrababu Naidu has reiterated his commitment to the welfare of the Muslim community, putting an end to speculation regarding TDP’s stance. The announcement comes just a day before the Bill is set to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on April 2.
TDP national spokesperson Prem Kumar Jain stated, “The Muslim community has been eagerly awaiting the Waqf Amendment Bill. Our party stands in support. Chandrababu Naidu has always prioritized the interests of the Muslim community, and I assure you, he remains committed to their welfare.”
Aiming for Transparency and Reform
Officially titled the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development (UMEED) Bill, the legislation seeks to modernize Waqf property management. Key provisions include digitization, improved audits, and legal measures to reclaim encroached properties. The BJP has positioned the Bill as a step towards benefiting marginalized Muslims while enhancing governance within Waqf boards.
JD(U) Raises Concerns Over Retrospective Application
Another NDA ally, the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], has expressed conditional support for the Bill. JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha stated, “While we support the Bill, it should not have a retrospective effect. Nitish Kumar has always safeguarded the interests of the Muslim community.”
JD(U) leaders also highlighted that a Muslim delegation had met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently to discuss concerns regarding the Bill. Rajeev Ranjan, a JD(U) leader, confirmed that these concerns were raised in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and hoped they had been duly considered.
Bill to Be Introduced in Lok Sabha on April 2
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha after Question Hour on April 2. An eight-hour discussion has been scheduled, with the possibility of an extension at the Speaker’s discretion.
During a BJP strategy meeting, Rijiju reassured party members that the Bill does not infringe on religious freedom but instead strengthens rights for underprivileged communities. He emphasized its focus on transparency, digitization, and protecting Waqf properties from encroachment.
