Visakhapatnam: The centenary of Rampa Rebellion, the armed revolt waged under the leadership of legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju was remembered on Monday at Chintapalli by a galaxy of VVIPs.

In fitting tribute to Raju, the State Government had named the newly carved out district as Alluri Sitarama Raju district. Union Minister for Tribal Welfare Arjun Munda, Union Minister for Tourism G Kishan Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Rajanna Dora visited the Chintapalli Police Station where 'Manyam Veerudu' had waged an armed revolt, which is also known as tribal upsurge against the Britishers in undivided Vizagapatam district under the Madras Presidency against attempts to curtail rights of tribals.

The legendary freedom fighter ambushed the police station at Chintapalli with bow and arrows and snatched away five knives, 14 bayonets, 12 guns and 1595 bullets. He shook the foreign rules by leading attacks on police stations in five days in a row at KD Peta, Addathiga, Rajavommangi and Rampachodavaram which subsequently led to his arrest and execution at a young age of 27 years.

In a tweet, Kishan Reddy said "visited Chintapalli Police Station in Chintapalli village where Alluri Sitarama Raju garu made his first raid exactly 100 years ago-popularly known as the Rampa Rebellion. During the visit I inspected the historic police station where conservation activities are to be taken up."
