India's economy faces mounting challenges, including high inflation, a weakening rupee, and record levels of unemployment. On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, slammed the government, stating that India's GDP growth has fallen to its lowest point in two years, at just 5.4%.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi pointed out that the Indian economy cannot progress as long as the benefits are concentrated in the hands of a few billionaires while farmers, laborers, the middle class, and the poor continue to struggle with economic hardships.

“The GDP growth rate has dropped to 5.4%, the lowest in two years. It’s clear that the economy cannot progress if only a few billionaires are benefiting, while the majority, including farmers, laborers, and the middle class, are facing financial difficulties,” Gandhi said.

He also highlighted the worsening inflation, which has surged to a 14-month high of 6.21%. Prices for essentials like potatoes and onions have increased by nearly 50% over the past year, and the rupee has fallen to 84.50 against the dollar.

Gandhi added, “Take a look at these facts: retail inflation has hit 6.21%, unemployment has reached a 45-year high, and the value of the rupee is at its lowest. In the past five years, the income of laborers, employees, and small business owners has either stagnated or decreased significantly.”
