Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resigned from his position, along with his team of ministers, and handed in their resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

This happened before the new government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could be formed.

The 17th Lok Sabha, which was in power from 2014 to 2019, will be dissolved as a result.

The decision to resign was made during a Cabinet meeting in the capital city on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Modi, who chaired the meeting, recommended the dissolution of the current cabinet, which is set to end its term on June 16.

Following the resignation, President Murmu accepted it and requested Prime Minister Modi and his council to continue functioning until the new government takes office.

Reports suggest that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) have given their approval, making way for the formation of the new BJP-led NDA government. It is anticipated that Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony will occur on June 8.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India declared results for 542 out of 543 constituencies. The BJP secured victory in 240 seats, while the Congress won 99. However, unlike in 2014, the BJP did not manage to secure a majority on its own this time.

Although Prime Minister Modi has been elected for a third term, his party will need the support of other coalition partners, including JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP's chief Chandrababu Naidu, to form the government.

The official X account of President of Indian shared the news, along with pictures today.

“Prime Minister @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Prime Minister tendered his resignation along with the Union Council of Ministers. The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed,” read a post on President’s account.
