Popularly called City of Destiny, Visakhapatnam, which is striving to find a place in the list of prominent places as an IT hub will get a shot in the arm with the inauguration of Infosys campus in the city by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on October 16.
Though there is rhetoric in various quarters to convert Visakhapatnam as the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh for a long time, it has remained only on paper with big ticket projects yet to be grounded despite talks with big players to invest here in the IT domain. Incidentally, the turnover despite the hype has remained between Rs 2,000 crore to Rs 2500 crore, mostly from the IT enabled services (ITeS). Business process management companies account for the lion’s share of turnover from the sector.
Local players hope that the launching of Infosys office in Visakhapatnam will bring good luck to the city. “The opening of a centre in the city will certainly be a game-changer. We expect many such big players to launch their campuses. We are ready to extend any support to Infosys to expand their operations,” Minister for IT, Industries and Commerce Gudivada Amarnath told Bizz Buzz.
Though Infosys top officials visited the city and took a building at IT Special Economic Zone on the Rushikonda hills, the formal launching of their operations got delayed due to technical issues. Informed sources said Infosys will initially start the operations with a headcount of 1400 allowing most of them hailing from north coastal Andhra to work on hybrid mode.
The inauguration will happen in the wake of a GO issued by Chief Secretary KS Jawahar Reddy on opening the camp office of Chief Minister in Visakhapatnam for effective development of backward North Andhra and finding suitable ‘transit’ accommodation for all other officials who need to take part in review meetings in the city.
Sreedhar Kosaraju, founder and chairman, DeepTech Naipunya Foundation, said Visakhapatnam has all the ingredients to become an IT hub due to its picturesque valley plus sea beach locations, social infrastructure and availability of manpower being rolled out locally from the reputed engineering and management institutes.
Visakhapatnam is home to major IT companies like Conduent, Miracle Software, Fluentgrid, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Patra India BPO, WNS and Concentrix. Adani Group is setting up a data centre and associated facilities at Kapuluppada with an investment of Rs 21,844 crore. APIIC recently issued an expression of interest notification for designing and development of a business district at Madhurawada at a cost of Rs 2300 crore under PPP mode. Raheja Group, which recently launched work on Inorbit Mall, also proposed to invest in an IT tower if suitable land is allotted by the government.
