Mumbai: In a significant legal move, Advocate Nripendra Krishna Roy has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on behalf of Amnesty India, a human rights organization registered under the Indian Trust Act, bearing registration number 336/F/1. The organization is headquartered at N.S. Road, New Barrackpore, Kolkata-700131, and is represented by its Secretary, Sushanta Sarkar, son of Late Biswamber Sarkar, residing at 336/F/1, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road, District – North 24 Parganas, Kolkata 700131.
The PIL has been filed against Union of India, Secretary General, National Human Rights Commission Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of India. And Director General, Border Security Force.
The same PIL was presented before the bench of the Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court, West Bengal. The Chief Justice, upon hearing the matter, has been pleased to direct those copies of the writ petition be served to the respondents for their response.
This directive marks a crucial step in the legal proceedings, ensuring that the respondents are formally notified and required to submit their stance on the matter.
Talking to Bizz Buzz, Advocate Nripendra Krishna Roy, who is representing Amnesty India in the PIL, said, “The fundamental rights of countless individuals are being violated due to administrative inaction.
This PIL is a call for justice, urging the authorities to uphold constitutional values and ensure human rights protections. We hope the judiciary will intervene decisively.” The PIL raises critical human rights concerns and seeks judicial intervention on pressing issues affecting marginalised communities.
Dr Shubhro Chakrabartty, Founder of the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation, said, “The PIL filed by Advocate Nripendra Krishna Roy on behalf of Amnesty India is a vital step toward addressing the systemic persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. For decades, Bengali Hindus and other marginalised communities have suffered in silence, facing violence, displacement, and state apathy.”
We urge the Indian government to take decisive action, uphold its moral and constitutional obligations, and extend unwavering support to those in distress. Justice delayed is justice denied, he added
Amnesty India, through this legal action, aims to uphold fundamental rights and ensure accountability from the authorities. With the Kolkata High Court taking cognisance of the petition, further developments in the case are anticipated in the coming hearings.
