The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a resounding comeback in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, securing a decisive victory after more than two decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the win, declaring on X that "development and good governance" had prevailed.

"My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Delhi for this historic mandate. We are committed to the all-round development of Delhi and will ensure it plays a crucial role in building a developed India," PM Modi said. He also praised BJP workers for their relentless efforts in securing the landslide victory.
Home Minister Amit Shah echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the people of Delhi had rejected false promises and corruption. Taking a dig at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he said voters had "destroyed the ‘Sheeshmahal’" – a reference to the controversy over Kejriwal’s lavish bungalow renovations.
AAP Faces Crushing Defeat
The BJP stormed into an early lead as vote counting began, eventually securing 48 out of Delhi's 70 seats, while AAP managed only 22. This marks a dramatic turnaround from 2020 when AAP won 62 seats, leaving the BJP with just eight.
AAP’s defeat was further compounded by Kejriwal's personal loss in the New Delhi constituency to BJP's Parvesh Verma. In a brief video statement, Kejriwal conceded defeat, stating, "We accept the people’s mandate and congratulate the BJP. We hope they fulfill the expectations of the people."
Outgoing Deputy CM Atishi acknowledged the setback but vowed that AAP would continue its political fight against the BJP.
What Led to AAP’s Downfall?
Political analysts point to a shift in voter sentiment, particularly among middle-class and women voters, who had previously backed AAP. The BJP capitalized on this shift with promises of income tax rebates and direct cash transfers.
Additionally, AAP was plagued by corruption allegations, including the liquor policy scam, and Kejriwal’s six-month stint in Tihar Jail further dented the party’s credibility. Governance issues, such as the air pollution crisis, deteriorating infrastructure, and unfulfilled promises—like cleaning the Yamuna River—also played a role in AAP’s decline.
With this victory, the BJP has reclaimed Delhi after 25 years, setting the stage for a new political chapter in the national capital.
