Hyderabad: The Society to Save Rocks, an NGO working for Rock Conservation in the country will be celebrating International Geo-diversity week from October 25 to 27. In keeping with UNESCO’s theme for 2024, “Conserving the Past, Sustaining the Future,” an array of paintings will be on display at The State Gallery of Art, Madhapur here. The exhibition is aptly titled “Sentinels of Hyderabad” and has the works of prominent Artist Shaun Heffernan and his students.

The Deccan Rocks spread over Telangana, Andhra, Karnataka and parts of Maharashtra are a priceless Natural Heritage that contribute to a balanced eco system in more ways than one. The granites of the Deccan have been dated by geologists to be approximately 2500 million years old, making them the second oldest rock formations of the world, a fact that should make every citizen take pride in safe guarding them. Besides being aesthetically unique, rocks greatly influence the soil, fauna & flora, the water table and act as valuable wind barriers.

The Society to Save Rocks focuses on spreading awareness on the need to make rock conservation sustainable in various ways. Integrating rocks into living spaces, creating geo-parks and utilizing rocky landscapes both for adventure and fitness is widely encouraged. Locally, the Society’s monthly rock walks which have been conducted regularly for over 28 years has attracted all age groups and has been responsible for many an initiation into bouldering, rock climbing and a love for Nature.

A V Ranganath, IPS, Commissioner, HYDRAA, will inaugurate the exhibition which will also be graced by K Lakshmi, IAS, Director, State Gallery of Art. The creative compositions will inspire one and all to champion the cause of rock conservation while preserving these gigantic balancing formations for generations to come. The Exhibition will be inaugurated on October 25 evening and remain open for public viewing on October 26 and 27 from 11 am to 6 pm.Deccan Rocks
