Hyderabad: The State government has made the decision to enhance the public transportation system to decrease the reliance on private vehicles and reduce pollution, addressing the intricate traffic challenges in Hyderabad.

As part of this initiative, a preliminary agreement was reached at the Comprehensive Mobility Planning meeting held two days ago at HMDA Swarnajayanti Bhavan, attended by HMRL MD NVS Reddy and HMDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed. The plan includes promoting the construction of skywalks that will connect Metro stations to nearby commercial and residential areas.

L&T has previously constructed flyovers linking the Punjagutta, Hitech City, and Erramanzil Metro stations to local malls, enabling metro users to access these shopping locations directly. In addition to this, skywalks have been established between the JBS and Parade Ground stations, allowing passengers to avoid crossing busy roads.

Raheja has developed an advanced skywalk equipped with various amenities that connects the Rayadurg Metro Station, facilitating convenient access to the offices of numerous international firms situated within the 11 towers of the Raheja Mind Space Complex.

Similarly, the circular skywalk constructed by HMDA links the Uppal Metro Station with the surrounding roads at Uppal Junction, providing significant benefits for Metro users and pedestrians navigating this busy intersection.

In light of this, Metro Managing Director NVS Reddy emphasised the promotion of skywalk construction on a large scale from Metro stations. He noted that there has been a positive response from different real estate companies, as well as from other residential and commercial developments.

Currently, a skywalk is being built by the company to connect the Dr Ambedkar Balanagar Metro Station with the nearby Phoenix/Landmark Mall, which is under construction. Similarly, the Vasavi Group is working on a skywalk that will link LB Nagar Station to the nearby Vasavi Anandanilayam residential complex that is also being developed.

A total of 12 towers, each with 33 floors, are being constructed in the Vasavi Anandanilayam complex, spread over a total of 25 acres. This skywalk will provide great convenience for many families who will be living in large numbers in them.

Similarly, L&T Metro MD KVB Reddy said that some other companies are in talks with them to build such skywalks from several Metro stations like Nagole, Stadium, Durgam Cheruvu, and Kukatpally.

He further informed that if any private companies want to construct such skywalks from Metro stations, they can contact KV Nagendra Prasad, Metro Rail Station Retail Officer, L&T Metro Rail, on phone number 9900093820.

Metro MD NVS Reddy also disclosed that all 57 stations in the initial phase of the Hyderabad Metro, covering a distance of 69 kilometers, feature pathways that allow individuals to cross from one side of the road to the other on both sides of each station. These pathways can be utilised by Metro passengers as well as by any pedestrian as a free route.
