Hyderabad: BC Welfare Association national president R Krishnaiah on Wednesday said he had resigned from his Rajya Sabha MP post to strengthen the BC movement.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday after resigning from the MP’s post, he said in order to take forward the BC movement strongly, there would be a possible blot that some political party was behind the movement and added that he took the decision to take up the movement irrespective of the party affiliations. “Our demand is that there has been some development of BCs in the Telugu States and this kind of development should be done across the country. Just as 50 per cent reservation for BCs in legislatures and educational opportunities provided for the BCs to study in the Telugu States, the education opportunities for BCs should be improved in other States as well. Only then will equality begin in all spheres within castes,” he added.

Krishnaiah said through the BC movement, their castes across the country should get justice and reservation in legislatures. "In the past, we fought many battles in the united Andhra Pradesh State and through this we have achieved our rights, but this time, we will fight peacefully on the path of Mahatma Gandhi. There is a need to build a strong movement for the rights of the BCs and if there is a strong BC movement in Telangana alone, it will have an impact on the neighbouring states as well as the central government," he said, adding he was fighting for the BC movement despite suffering from ill-health on the one hand and difficulties due to age on the other. He urged the BCs leaders to form village, mandal and district level committees to strengthen their struggle. He also said people from all parties should join their movement. “My life's goal is to achieve 50 per cent reservation for BCs in legislatures. Every BC child should fight for this," Krishnaiah called.

He also said there was a pressure on him to form a political party, but no final decision had been taken. “We have to think about forming the party with other elders. After my resignation, many parties have approached me and promised me that I will be given a suitable position if I join their party, but I have not accepted their proposals. There are poor people in all castes. But social equality is needed and the poor among the BC castes are not getting the least respect. Only when they get political power will they get respect in the society,” he said. He called upon the BCs to unite in the same way like the separate Telangana State activists.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Mallu Ravi and MLC Teenmar Mallanna called on Krishnaiah and invited him to join their party.
