Hyderabad: On November 4, 2024, Indian Railways carried the highest number of passengers ever in a single day. Three crore passengers travelled by Railways, which is more than the population of Australia and New Zealand combined. Overall, 120.72 lakh (19.43 lakh reserved and 101.29 lakh unreserved non-suburban) passengers were carried on November 4, 2024. About 180 lakh suburban passenger traffic was tackled by Indian Railways on the day. These are the highest single day passenger figures for the current year.
To cater the additional traffic during the Durga Pooja/ Diwali/ Chath rush, a total of 7,666 special train services were announced to be run from October 1, 2024 to November 30, 2024. In the same period last year, 4,429 trips were operated. This is 73 per cent more than last year. Till date 4,521 Special trains have been operated between October 1 and November 5. About 65 lakh additional passengers have been facilitated by Railways during this period in special trains, a railway release says.
