Hyderabad: In a groundbreaking event, the AI Hackday mega hackathon took place this weekend at IIIT Hyderabad, marking the first round of an ambitious initiative to promote people-centric AI development. The event saw participation from over 20 colleges, with more than 60 faculty members and 100 industry mentors guiding 600+ teams of students. Over 2,000 participants collaborated to create AI solutions aimed at addressing real-world problems.

Organized by viswam.ai, a center established by IIIT Hyderabad and swecha.org, the AI Hackday is part of a three-stage series designed to drive innovation and foster the development of AI tools for societal good. The series will culminate in the ‘AI Days 2025: Spark Camp,’ where 100 production-ready AI applications will be showcased, each focused on solving India’s unique challenges.

During the inauguration, Bhavesh Mishra, emphasized the importance of harnessing the AI revolution in India. He pointed out the success of non-Western models like DeepSeek LLM and stressed that India has the potential to develop context-driven AI models suited to local needs.

The hackathon highlighted the use of AI to bridge societal gaps and create more inclusive, tech-driven solutions. Students developed prototypes using AI for audio tools, story generation, image processing, and other innovative applications that can benefit various sectors.

Distinguished speakers and mentors at the event included Prof. Ramesh Loganathan from IIIT Hyderabad, Chaitanya Chokkareddy, Co-founder and CTO of Ozonetel, Kiran Chandra, Head of Viswam.AI, and Pradeep Kumar Jilagam from Micron Technology.

AI Hackday is part of a broader initiative that includes the One Lakh Internship Program, which encourages students to work on community-driven AI projects. This program aims to compile culture-specific datasets for training Indic language models, with a focus on the unique dialects and cultural nuances of India.

The event reflects a significant step towards building deep AI skills on a large scale, empowering students to create localized AI solutions and contribute to a more inclusive technological future.
